Why choose double glazing?
Installing double glazing is one of the best home improvement investments you can make, but not all windows are made the same – Pro Glaze Group does it best. Among our double glazed options, we offer A+ rated windows, achieving an average of 70% to 80% of prevented heat loss.
Our experienced team offers high quality windows and doors, available in different styles, materials and glazing options. Opt for our A+ double glazing and you’ll benefit from the following:
- Energy efficiency – To increase your home’s energy efficiency is to decrease the amount of heat loss. While some heat loss is inevitable, you can minimise this with double glazing units with the high levels of thermal efficiency.
- Save money – We’ve found that through installing double glazing, Perth residents report savings up to £300 annually in energy bills.
- Property value – Your property value can in part be impacted by how energy efficient your home is, a more efficient home having lower running costs, and therefore being more attractive in the property market. Energy efficiency is graded through EPC (energy performance certificate), ranging from G to A, lowest to highest respectively. Higher EPC directly increases property value.
- Noise reduction – Your Perth home isn’t immune to outside noise, but our double glazed units can block up to 35 decibels in noise, allowing you to live in more peaceful comfort.
- Style options – From uPVC windows to traditional timber materials, casement windows to bay windows, we offer windows of all types.
Casement windows
Casement windows are a very common type of window that sees widespread usage due to its versatility. It opens up like a door, with hinges being on the sides, allowing for a wide open space that lets in high levels of ventilation. This is useful for summer months, and the tight seal that is formed in the frame when the window is closed, preventing heat loss in winter months.
They are suited for homes that are both traditional and modern Perth homes.
Bay windows
Bay windows are likely the most premium type of windows installed on the market. This is because of the extra construction work required to fit them. Whether on the ground or upper levels, they are made by creating an alcove that projects outward, either in a curved or angular shape. The extra dimension allows for more window panes, how many depends on how large the installation is.
Bay windows are a favourite for Perth customers who want to transform their home, and possibly increase the property value with the extra natural light and space afforded by them. They are a perfect option for Perth homes that feature period Victorian and Edwardian architecture.
Tilt and turn windows
Tilt and turn windows have two functions, as per the name. The tilt function allows homeowners to open the top of their window, providing ventilations whilst minimising access from the outside. The turn function, on the other hand, fully opens the window in both directions.
These functions make tilt and turn windows highly popular amongst security conscious homeowners, as well as those wishing to have windows installed that are easier to maintain. Due to their ability to turn inwards, they make cleaning your windows from upper floors much easier.

French windows
French windows have the same reputation as French doors, evoking sophistication through its symmetrical designs and large window panes. It lacks a central mullion, offering unobstructed views of the outside and increased natural light due to the lack of framing.
These windows are a great fit for period properties due to its classic design, as well as homes with garden-facing rooms.
uPVC windows
uPVC windows are the most popular material on the market. uPVC has immunities against weathering effects, staining, UV light and other effects that can erode lesser frames, all whilst offering high energy efficiency. Furthermore, it’s highly affordable – thanks to the lowered manufacturing costs.
The many designs and colours of uPVC make them highly versatile applications.

Should I repair or replace double glazing?
Double glazed windows that have signs of damage, or suffer moisture infiltration, will likely only continue to deteriorate. This means that either a repair or replacement windows are in order – but which should you opt for?
The answer to this depends very much on the state of damage. Repairs are better for conditions like the following:
- Worn seals and damaged hardware – If you feel draughts around your window frame or notice loose locks/hinges, you should consider repair. These issues can be fixed so long as the glass itself isn’t damaged, as that means the insulating gas between the two glass panels will have escaped.
- Slight misalignment of frames – If your double glazing windows are difficult to open or close, or you notice air leaks, then the frames may have shifted within the unit. Adjusting this alignment fast is key, as prolonged misalignment may mean that insulating gas will be lost over time.
If you’re having any of the following issue, window replacement may be your best option:
- Consistent condensation – Condensation happens as a result of warm, moist air touching cold surfaces. Double glazing units are meant to keep the temperature of the interior pane stable due to their disconnection from the outside pane. If condensation occurs regularly, this is likely a sign that the insulating ability has gone, most likely due to leakage or age.
- Significant damage to the glass or frames – Cracked or damaged panes compromise the overall function and security of windows. When the glass is cracked, insulating gas will leak, resulting in loss of function.
- Older windows – Older windows installed over 15-20 years ago may degrade with age, or simply be outdated. In this case, opting for our grade A+ double glazing windows means having a much higher quality of insulation, noise reduction and overall property value.
What is secondary glazing, and should I use it?
Secondary glazing refers to a secondary pane of glass that can be attached and removed to a single pane window without having to deconstruct the entire unit. The secondary glazing provides much the same benefits that double glazing windows provide, only to a lesser extent.
Secondary glazing can reduce heat loss by between 50% to 60%, whereas our modern A+ rated windows reduce heat loss by 70% to 80%. The cost is usually somewhere between £200 to £500 per window, and its installation is much easier and less intrusive than that of double glazing.
But is it a better investment? Double glazing windows should be your priority if:
- Maximum performance – If your goal is to have the highest quality of energy efficiency and noise reduction, then double glazed (or even triple glazed) windows are the way to go.
- Long term – If you’re planning to be in your property long term, then double glazing units will not only last longer, but provide better savings quicker than secondary glazing.
Secondary glazing is a good option for people in the following situations:
- Protected premises – If the place in which you’re dwelling is a listed or heritage property, then you may be unable to upgrade to double glazing. However, secondary glazing has a much lower impact on the aesthetics of the protected property, making them a go-to option.
- Convenience – Secondary glazing has much less expensive than double glazing, so if you require a cost-effective unit that can be applied with much less fuss or downtime than double glazing installation, then consider secondary glazing,
Do I need building regulations approval for double glazed windows?
Yes. Building regulations approval is always required for new or replacement windows, to ensure that they meet standards for energy efficiency, ventilations, safety and fire escape compliance. Hire a competent installer registered with the competent person scheme, such as ProGlaze, and this allows self-certification of your double glazing, barring the need for separate approval.
If you find yourself needing to apply, then do so with your nearest local authority. Submit an application for regulations approval and an inspector will come to survey the property. Upon certification, you’ll receive proof of compliance.
What is the lifespan of double glazed units?
The typical lifespan of a double glazed window is between 20 to 35 years.
The range difference can be explained via the following
- Material quality – Higher-quality windows are going to last longer, this much is a given. Composite is the strongest window and door type on the market.
- Installation – Ensure that the installation is done by a proper professional.
- Maintenance – Regular cleaning and addressing of minor issues like worn seals or hinges that extend lifespans.
- Environmental factors – Harsh weathering conditions and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can reduce overall longevity.
